Speakers BIO

Tom Kyte – Senior Technical Architect at Oracle

Tom Kyte is a Senior Technical Architect in Oracle’s Server Technology Division. Tom is the Tom behind the AskTom column in Oracle Magazine, answering people’s questions about the Oracle database and its tools ( He is also the author of Expert Oracle Database Architecture (Apress, 2005/2009), Expert One on One Oracle(Wrox Press, 2001/Apress 2004), Beginning Oracle Programing (Wrox press, 2002/Apress 2004), and Effective Oracle by Design (Oracle Press, 2003). These are books about the general use of the database and how to develop successful Oracle applications.

Session Title: What’s New in Oracle Database 12c Release
Oracle Database 12c Release is out. This session will explore some of the new capabilities found in this release including In-Memory optimizations, Attribute Clustering and enhancements to Oracle Multitenant.

Session Title: Securing Data in Oracle Database 12c
Oracle Database has a long history of security ‘firsts’. In this session, we’ll take a look at the current state of the art security features to be found in Oracle Database 12c. Both new and old capabilities will be covered.

SQL Plan Management: Finally consistent query performance!
The performance of any database application heavily relies on consistent query execution. While the Oracle Optimizer is perfectly suited to evaluate the best possible plan without any user intervention, a SQL statement’s execution plan can change unexpectedly for a variety of reasons. This potential for change makes even the most experienced DBAs and developers nervous. SQL Plan Management (SPM) offers an ideal solution to this conundrum by preserving the current execution plans amidst environment changes, and only allowing plans to change if it results in improved performance. This presentation will provide a detailed explanation of how SPM works, along with step by step instructions on how to capture your existing execution plans. We will also cover how to test and verify any newly found plans, as well as explaining in detail how SPM interacts with other plan stability features such as SQL profiles, SQL patches and adaptive cursor sharing.

Joel Kallman – Director APEX Development Oracle Corporation

Joel R. Kallman is Director of Software Development for Oracle’s Server Technologies division at Oracle America, Inc. Joel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Science from the College of Engineering, Ohio State University.
Session 1: What’s the Big Deal about Oracle Application Express and Why Should I Care?
Oracle Application Express (APEX) is the native Web development environment of the Oracle Database. And guess what? You’re licensed for it already! This session will cover the history and architecture of APEX, cover a large number of use cases, and will primarily consist of live demonstration.

Session 2: Revolutionary Oracle Application Express 5.0
Come learn about what’s coming in Oracle Application Express in 2015, from the wildly productive and graphical Page Designer to the modern, responsive and easily customizable Universal Theme. Web applications against your Oracle Database have never looked so good!

Go Faster: Make Oracle Work For You

Oracle DBAs find it difficult to get complete and correct information about how the database engine works. Even when bits of truth are collected, consolidating the data into a useful performance optimizing solution is complicated. When a diagnosis is incomplete or the DBA doesn’t understand why a solution improves performance, solution creation becomes a guessing game resulting in haphazard performance improvements.
In this seminar you will learn how selected areas of Oracle work together. The topics are updated constantly (including Oracle 12c) to make this seminar fresh for each audience. Care is given as to why performance solutions work and how to make them usable and practical in a complex and highly available production environment.
Craig is a long time Oracle DBA (1989) who specializes in Oracle performance. He is also an Oracle ACE Director, performance researcher and blogger, consultant, author of two books (Oracle Performance Firefighting, Forecasting Oracle Performance), an enthusiastic conference speaker, and a passionate teacher to thousands of Oracle professionals. He is the founder and president of OraPub, creator of the performance analysis tool, Stori, and clearly pushes the teaching envelope with his online seminars.  His blog, A Wider View, is where to find his most recent public performance research.
